A Grade. Creamy white in color, average width 3-4", lengths 3-4'. Its soft, even texture and light weight makes it a popular model-making material. It is stronger than polystyrene or granulated cork. Easy to work with thin sharp edged tools. The lightest commercial timber weighing only 1 pound per board foot. |
Machining - Blades must be kept sharp. Can be cut and shaped easily with hand tools. Accepts finishes well but absorbs large quantities of the finish.
Uses - Often used for heat, sound and vibration insulation and buoyancy in rafts, lifebelts, floats, nets, buoys and water sports equipment. Also for protective packaging, toys, and model making, and as core material in light-weight sandwich construction.
