Summary

Holly is a creamy-white wood that normally comes in smaller boards and tends to have a great deal of defects (Expect a high waste factor).

Details

Machining - Difficult to saw because of the irregular grain, and for a smooth finish the cutting edges must be kept really sharp and the cutting ange reduced to 15 degrees. There is a moderate blunting effect on tools and high resisitance to working with hand tools. It can be nailed, screwed and glued satisfactory; it stains readily and provides and excellent finish.

Uses - Used as a substiture for boxwood and dyed as a substitute for ebony. It is an excellent turnery wood. Used for engraving blocks, small musical intruments, keys for pianos and organs, brush backs, and cut into inlay lines and stringings for furniture decoration.

Jank Hardness Rating - 1020 (Whats This?)
